Australia’s new year celebrations were marred by a string of violent incidents including attempted murders, a suspicious death, a hit and run and numerous assaults.

Thousands of calls were made to paramedics across the country — including well over 2,500 in NSW alone — as revellers succumbed to extreme intoxication and alcohol related injuries.

For a handful of Australians however, the last night of 2018 proved life changing, deadly or both.

In central Queensland, a 67-year-old man is being questioned over the suspicious death of a young man early this morning.

On the NSW Central Coast, a woman has been arrested after a man was stabbed on a footpath in the beachside suburb of Terrigal.

Police said the 25-year-old victim became involved in a verbal argument with another man on Kurrawybe Ave just before 2am.

Nearby security officers and a woman intervened and the man received a laceration to his neck. The woman left the scene on foot but was arrested a short time later at a home in Berkley Vale.

She was charged with reckless wounding and granted conditional bail to appear at

Gosford Local Court on January 22.
