Australian values: what the bloody hell are they?

You might have thought there can't be too many more variations on the annual Australia Day debate – when to celebrate, and what. But Prime Minister Scott Morrison came up with a new twist this week.

Getting in early with an opening salvo on Twitter last Saturday, he declared that he would “protect our national day from people trying to skirt the rules or playing politics” by ensuring that local councils contemplating rebellion over the date would be made to hold citizenship ceremonies on the day itself.

Pearson told Abbott he should have nominated three such moments. “The first is the crossing of the land bridge in the Torres Strait 65,000 years ago. Secondly, perhaps the 26th of January 1788. And thirdly the moment when we got rid of the White Australia Policy, to allow migrants to come from wheresoever on Earth,” Pearson said. “Those for me are the three strands of Australia’s identity and nationhood.”
