Illawarra Smiths Hill High School principal David Deitz seriously injured in 'freak' velodrome crash

The principal of an Illawarra high school has been hospitalised with serious injuries following a heavy crash during a community race.
David Deitz was competing at the 60th anniversary of the Illawarra Track Carnival at the Illawarra Velodrome when he crashed into a fence.
The principal of Smiths Hill High School was treated by paramedics before he was flown to the Royal North Shore Hospital for emergency surgery.
The school released a statement which said the surgery was successful but Mr Deitz had severely compromised mobility in his body.
