Total fire ban in Sydney and the Illawarra today as burst of warm weather forecast to hit state

A total fire ban has been issued for all of Sydney and the Illawarra today with an unseasonable burst of warm, dry and windy weather forecast to hit NSW.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has given the entire Sydney area a rating of "extreme" and the Illawarra region has been rated as "high".

Temperatures are expected to climb across the state following a brief cold snap in Sydney and its surrounding suburbs.
