A council on the New South Wales south coast is looking to increase support for people living in mobile homes by establishing more toilet waste disposal sites in public areas. Last night's unanimous vote is the third time Wollongong City Council has agreed to streamline the process of emptying cassette tanks or buckets in a way that is "simple and dignified" for those living in their vehicles.
Councillor Ann Martin, who put forward the notice of motion, said the number of available resources in Wollongong was forcing mobile home owners to either travel to a waste facility or empty in unsolicited places.
"People who are homeless are basically collecting their wees and poos in buckets, if we are lucky," Cr Martin said.
"I noticed there is a lot of toilet paper in the bush."
